LOVE: Las Hermanas Mirabal

Latinos LOVE Las Hermanas Mirabal (the Mirabal Sisters). Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and Maria Teresa Mirabal were four extraordinary Dominican women. They fought for the freedom of their country till their very last breath. With intelligence and bravery they battled against dictator, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina (a.k.a. El Jefe). Trujillo ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until he was assassinated in 1961. Trujillo was what many referred to as a cold, callous, merciless man who tortured his prisoners, suppressed his people, and exterminated anyone who opposed him.

The Mirabal sisters' plan was to annihilate Trujillo and his regime by giving their countrymen hope and strength to fight back. But this was no easy task. Trujillo imprisoned, humiliated, tortured, and killed anyone close to the Mirabal sisters, until he finally executed 3 out of the 4  of them: Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and their driver, Rufino de la Cruz, on November 25, 1960 in Puerto Plata. They lost their lives struggling to restore democracy and liberty for the Dominican Republic. Their legacy will live on forever in our hearts and the wholehearted lessons they taught us will not go forgotten. Six months after the Mirabal killings, the Trujillo system came crumbling down on May 30, 1961.
